Science & Spirits Series - Three Cheers For the Pika: Past, Present and Future!

Thursday December 1st

Join us as we continue our series that pairs information and themed cocktails with a talk courtesy of the Rocky Mountain Conservancy focused an an elusive mountain animal: the pika.

Courtesy of the RMC: “ Anyone who's spent time high in Colorado's mountains has heard the squeak of the American pika, a climate-sensitive furball that thrives at high elevations. A local research team will regale you with recent and ongoing pika studies in Rocky Mountain National Park, offering insight into pika behavior and response to our changing climate.”

This talk will be a team effort, split among three experts: Alex Wells, Ashley Whipple, and Dr. Chris Ray.

About the lecturers:

As Denver Zoo's Community Conservation Coordinator, Alex Wells is Co-Director of the Colorado Pika Project. In 8th grade, he constructed a larger-than-life sculpture of an American pika for a school project, the start of a lifelong appreciation for this charismatic alpine dweller. Alex has a Bachelor's Degree in Conservation Biology from Middlebury College and has a background in coordinating community science projects. In his current role, he finds it deeply meaningful to help protect the species and landscape he grew up with.

Ashley Whipple completed her master's degree in 2019 under the guidance of Dr. Chris Ray at the University of Colorado - Boulder. Her thesis focused on understanding whether stress-associated hormone levels could be used to assess habitat quality in American pika. Now, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Ashley studies wildlife-habitat relationships and seeks to understand how to best manage wildlife in the face of multiple threats.

Chris Ray studies the dynamics of plant and animal populations threatened by climate change and habitat loss. Some of her recent projects include estimating bird trends in national parks, and her longest projects are focused on understanding the American pika. Chris has a PhD in Population Biology from the University of California, Davis, and leads several studies in the Front Range and elsewhere on the response of pikas and their habitat to changes in climate.
